Established in 2017 after the popularity of Puyo Puyo Tetris across the world during its international release, PuyoGB is the UK’s leading community voice that helps to bring more people together through Puyo Puyo, an Action Puzzle Game made by Compile in Japan, enjoyed by over a million people since 1991.
PuyoGB aims to work alongside tournament organisers, conventions and interested sponsors to help promote Puyo Puyo as a competitive eSport. In this world where most eSports are genres such as FPS’s or Fighting games, very few games have the ability to break the mould. Here in the UK especially, with a growing interest in Japanese media, there are finally serious challengers to stand up against the gaming juggernauts, and we at PuyoGB are ambitious enough to go toe-to-toe with the mainstream in an attempt to bring this wonderfully addictive puzzle game at a competitive level so that more people can play and share in its enjoyment! With this in mind, competition will be fierce, and the best players in the country have the opportunity to represent the UK national side for International Test Matches against other nations such as Japan, France, and the USA. Such matches in Puyo Puyo Tetris include Single-player Swap Rules, and Mixed Doubles VS, rules that were formed by input from the PuyoGB admin BlueHairKei in collaboration with the organiser of Puyo Puyo Tetris AnimEVO 2017, Kiyobi, which are now the metagame standard.
PuyoGB is formed by current and former UK Puyo Puyo players, among those people who promote the game at their local gaming clubs. As players, we’re constantly in contact, and playing with, other fans around the world, honing and refining our skills for mutual benefit. As promoters and organisers, we openly support Puyo Puyo Tetris for Nintendo Switch and Sony Playstation 4, and endeavour to continue to support both platforms to allow all players to flourish and grow under our community structure. On top of this, we also openly promote previous Puyo Puyo games only released in Japan, as well as older Western Puyo games (such as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine). The community will also help players with various playing techniques, and are open to exhibition matches with fellow worldwide communities, with the end game to contribute to the inaugural Puyo Puyo World Championships!
If you’re a newbie, a seasoned veteran, or a fan of the series looking to share the fun, we welcome you with open arms. Community members will try to organise meetups in areas of the UK so that we have more than just an online presence. If you’re a Tetris player that wants to learn more about Puyo Puyo, we have you covered.
